Polishing Silver

Please settle my thoughts on this...

I had a relation that kindly offered to sell me some silver rounds. I went to see them, they were very nice and shiny and all. When I pointed that out she said "yeah, I just polished them!" Am I an idiot or does polishing destroy the value of silver, especially numismatic coins? When I raised this issue she said, "no, it's some really good non-abrasive stuff that I applied with a cotton ball." Condition was not a real issue here since these were rounds but can somebody help me out?

Generally, you don't clean any coins of Numismatic value... It can seriously drop the re-sale value of the coin...

If its just a Generic Round or Bullion Non-Numis, clean away... Why not???

Re: Polishing Silver

There is a wealth of pre-post information about polishing silver bullion and 90% coins. Search the subject on this and a couple of the other GIM Purchasing Gold & Silver and PM forums.

Take a mint roll of gold or silver eagles to your local coin dealer and get his cash offer. Then take the coins home, polish the hell out of them, and take them back for another offer.

You'll figure it out !
